FOOTBALL
We start off in Poland this month with the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup, an event renowned for uncovering future stars of the 'Beautiful Game' - Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba and Sergio Aguero are past winners of the Golden Ball (best player of the tournament) at this biennial event.
This year sees England looking to defend the title they won in Korea in 2017, though many watching the thrilling action on SuperSport will no doubt be rooting for the four African representatives - Senegal, South Africa, Mali and Nigeria - as they look to become just the second team from the continent to win the World Cup, following in the footsteps of Ghana 10 years ago.
CRICKET
Just a week after the U-20 World Cup gets going, cricket fans will be licking their lips at the prospect of six weeks' worth of One Day Internationals from the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales, starting on May 30 on SuperSport 2, DStv Channel 202. The opening match from the Oval in London, which will be live on DStv sees South Africa's Proteas looking to upset one of the favourites for the title, co-host nation England.
The other teams to watch include defending champions Australia (who have welcomed back controversial players Steve Smith and David Warner following their bans for ball tampering in a Test series in South Africa last year), a well-rounded Indian team and the dark horses Pakistan, whose outstanding bowling attack could give them an edge in English conditions.

The major tournament action keeps rolling with the start of the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup on June 7. The tournament in France will be the eighth edition of the Women's World Cup and defending champions United States are amongst the strong favourites to claim the title, though they will face stiff competition from the host team, Germany and England. Here in Africa, SuperSport viewers on DStv will be cheering on our continental representatives, Nigeria, Cameroon and South Africa.
RUGBY
Rugby fans will be in seventh heaven from September 20 on when the ninth IRB Rugby World Cup kicks off in Japan. Twenty teams will battle over 48 matches, with New Zealand the favourites to win the tournament and claim a hat-trick of World Cup titles. England, Wales and Ireland are probably best placed to challenge the All Blacks, but keep an eye out for South Africa's Springboks, who will enjoy heading into the tournament as underdogs.
ATHLETICS
The global sports events for 2019 wraps up with the IAAF World Championships from Doha in Qatar from September 27 to October 6. DStv subscribers will have the chance to see truly world class athletes chase the title which is beaten only by an Olympic gold medal in prestige terms. African fans will hope to see Wayde van Niekerk back in major competition action after recovering from a major knee injury. The sprinter was a star of the last IAAF World Champs in London in 2017, claiming gold in the 400m and silver in the 200m.
