NATIONAL Art Gallery in Bulawayo has gone digital in its attempt to keep the current exhibitions alive during the on-going coronavirus (Covid 19) 21-day lockdown.

The National Gallery last month shut all its branches across the country as a result of the coronavirus outbreak.
However, the gallery here has shifted its sights on the digital space in a bid to harness the attention of art lovers across the globe.

"This is not our first virtual tour; we did the first one in July last year when we did a 360 Degrees Immersive virtual tour of the whole National Gallery of Bulawayo.

"The idea is to enhance digital visitorship of the gallery through virtual tours especially now in light of Covid-19 where we have shut down," gallery director Butho Nyathi told Daily News.

He added: "We have done the second version which focuses exclusively on the running exhibitions which members of the public were meant to be viewing. These are mainly the Child Rights Exhibition in partnership with Embassy of Sweden and Legal Resource Foundation. People can still see this exhibition which speaks of issues to do with children's rights."

Nyathi said the other exhibition consists of elements from various minority ethnic communities found in Matabeleland provinces.

"We are talking of traditional baskets, doors; clay pots, reed mates, smoking pipes and axes. These are culture materials of our different communities in the region. They are part of our permanent collection and we have been having this exhibition since January and it's still running online," he said.

Nyathi further noted that it was their aim to ensure art lovers could access the gallery services during the lockdown.
"Essentially, it's all about making sure people can visit the gallery virtually during this lockdown, people in Zimbabwe and beyond.

"It speaks generally of our desire to do more digital exhibitions. This is just but a step in other on-going processes where we want to progress more towards the digital space in light of the fourth industrial revolution in this 21st century."
