WHILE Zimbabwe needs 350 more base stations, investors are not getting funding to implement the projects, Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) director-general Gift Machengete has said.

Machengete told the parliamentary portfolio committee on Information Communication Technology (ICT) on Monday: "We would want to cover each corner of the country and from the study our engineers did, it shows that we need 350 base stations in order to do so.

"We initially awarded a tender to Huawei for 350 base stations and Huawei have been trying to source funding for those base stations which will be shared.

"Huawei have not been successful in mobilising the funds, they were banking on getting money from China Exim Bank, but that money has not been released for some time now.

"We decided to cancel the tender, but later on we decided against that, we said why not just let them continue so they try and find funding, who knows maybe they will get the funding," he said.
