ICT Minister Kazembe Kazembe has pledged his office's support to the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry, Technomag reported.

Speaking during the inaugural BPO and contact center conference today in the capital, Kazembe said even though Zimbabwe's value proposition is about overall economic value, high-quality service and staff his ministry is committed to playing a complementary role in the development of the local BPO industry.

He said the BPO industry has the potential to become a major driver of inclusive growth in the country.

"My Ministry in particular – is committed to playing a complementary role in the development of the local BPO industry,"

"We recognize that the BPO industry has the potential to be one of the major drivers of inclusive growth in the country. To this extent, through the implementation of effective and appropriate policies, my Ministry aims to develop an enabling environment for the creation of a knowledge-based society that will benefit key economic players," he said.

The BPO industry has opened up opportunities to over 6 000 people in Zimbabwe. However, Minister Kazembe urged corporates to reskill their workforce due to the rise of robotic process automations.

"The BPO industry has immense potential to contribute to economic growth and employment creation in the country. I am also informed that over 6000 people are already working on contact centers in Zimbabwe. However, I urge the BPO sector to consider re-skilling their workforce because the emergence of Robotic Process Automation has begun to take over simple jobs might reduce the economy's reliance on contact centers," he added.

BPO as a concept has become one of the main drivers for economic growth, especially in developing countries.

The concept is one of the fastest-growing in ICT-based industries that are creating jobs and upon which the new economies are based. In India, for instance, a total of 1.1 million people worked in the Indian BPO industry in 2017 while the BPO sector in the Philippines currently employs over 1.2 million people.
