Econet Wireless Zimbabwe effectively from Monday increased the minimum purchase price of airtime from $1 to $2.

It never rains but pours for Econet subscribers, the development comes after a statement released by Econet on Monday that it will be taking drastic measures to ensure that it's operations stay afloat.

Ofcourse this falls on already cash strapped consumers who are also struggling to make ends meet in this ailing economy.

However, taking into cognisance, the power outages and how it has affected the running of businesses in general, perhaps the shift to transact $2 minimum is a result of the extra expenses that the telco is incurring due to the power outages that have rocked the country.

In a statement released on Monday Econet said that they would take measures accordingly to ensure business viability.

"Given the foregoing, we have stepped up our engagement with the relevant stakeholders with a view to finding an urgent solution to the problem that Econet and the mobile telecommunications industry faces due to the national power crisis.

"If the authorities that oversee the industry do not offer quick viable solutions as required in the current crisis, the business will have no choice but to take drastic measures to ensure sustainable service," it read.
