The parliamentary portfolio on ICT, Postal and Courier services has summoned the ministry of ICT to produce documents to parliament, which clears the air on the Telecel purchasing deal.

Government has chosen a way of secrecy, stating that the deal was private and confidential, but the parliamentary portfolio insists the deal was for a public asset and the government must be accountable and clear the air.

The issue is stemming from the government ownership position of 60% Telecel Zimbabwe stake, which it purchased from Telecel International which was owned by Vimplecom.

The details on the deal have remained sketchy with the government not confirming whether Vimplecom had received part payment or full payment, while they are worries that the balance towards Vimplecom has not been paid, the state may lose the asset.

Government, however, is believed to have cut a deal with the Russian based company and seem to be calm and not worried about such an eventuality, but they have not come in open on how exactly they are planning to close the deal.

The ICT parliamentary portfolio has summoned the ministry, putting pressure on the clerk of court but it appears the same process has been frustrated with procedural excuses.

We contacted the clerk of parliament, Mr Kennedy Mugove Chokuda, who was yet to respond, before the time of publishing, his comments will be added as soon as he responds to the inquiry.
