AI to advance SDGs in Zimbabwe

Deputy Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services Honorable Jerifan Muswere says Artificial Intelligence (AI) will accelerate Zimbabwe's progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and will be a key enabler in the transformation of economic policies.

Speaking at the AI For Good 2019 Global Summit, Hon Muswere spoke on various goals that can be improved through the use of Artificial Intelligence.

"AI will assist in the fulfilment of a number of SDGs such as poverty, hunger, clean water and sanitation, climate action, industry, innovation and infrastructure,"

He went on to say taking strides in machine learning will help fast track development in Zimbabwe whilst harnessing cutting-edge technologies to improve outcomes for the marginalised.

"With respect to Zimbabwe, the explicit goal for ICTs is in respect to the growth of the industry, and also to ensure that we utilize ICT technologies for the transformation of our economic policy, whilst harnessing innovation and bridging the rural-urban digital divide," he said

On average, AI productivity and economic growth has a larger simulation indicating that AI could boost world output by $13 trillion by 2030, lifting GDP by 1.2 percent a year.

Speaking on when Zimbabwe is expected to be a key player in AI, Hon Muswere said:" we have the vision 2030, and we are trying to ensure that by 2030 we have a middle income economy,"

The AI for Good Global Summit is the leading United Nations platform for global and inclusive dialogue on AI. The Summit is hosted each year in Geneva by the ITU in partnership with UN Sister agencies, XPRIZE Foundation and ACM.

Summit participants discuss benefits of sharing AI tools and resources, datasets, and supporting knowledge and expertise.
