Postal Telecommunications and Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) through its parent ministry, commissioned the Dendera Moran Site yesterday in Zhombe.

This is the second Moran Base station to be commissioned in the Midlands Province.

A Moran base station allows all mobile networks to share one tower transporting the same signal to the last mile, under infrastructure sharing initiative driven by the government via USF funds.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, Deputy Minister Hon Jerifan Muswere said the availability of connectivity through the provision of ICT infrastructure is the first step to ensure community inclusivity.

"The increased availability and accessibility of ICT services to communities results in social inclusion and economic development," he said

"The availability of ICT infrastructure in rural communities such as Dendera opens the door for the provision of other services such as e-Agriculture, Telemedicine, e-Learning and e-Government".

The Minister went on to say that a number of government offices and amenity institutions are yet to be brought under the footmark of mainstream ICT services, and as such the ministry will continue to grind it out until the legacy of connecting the unconnected and mitigating the dearth of digital awareness is fully met.

Addressing delegates and captains of the industry, Potraz Director-General Dr Gift Machengete expressed how collaboration with various stakeholders have made the erection of the base station a success.

"This site is a culmination of sterling collaborative efforts and investment by the Ministry of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, Potraz, Operators and Dendera community," he said.

The Authority has been rolling out various programs to ensure the improvement of both ICT access and use. To date, Potraz has set up 14 Community Information Centres, with two of the centres training basic computer skills. This has resulted in 1 925 people having being trained in the Midlands Province.

The two Moran base stations complement the other 644 base stations in the Midlands province.
