Postal and Telecommunication Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) boss Gift Machengete has been struck by family tragedy after the death of his son on Saturday morning. Takudzwa Machengete, 28, died of spinal cord complications. The death was said to be sudden and unexpected.

Burial arrangements will be advised. Machengete was appointed Potraz director-general in October 2016, replacing Cecilia Nyamutswa.

A career civil servant and diplomat, Machengete's work experience dates back from 1985 when he was employed as a research economist by the President's Department up to 1991. He has served as the economic counsellor at the Zimbabwe Embassy in China.

After that he served as deputy high commissioner, deputy ambassador and high commissioner at the Zimbabwe Embassy in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Machengete is expected in court on Wednesday where he is facing charges of criminal abuse office in a case in which the prosecution team has absconded trial six times in a row.

A magistrate is expected to rule on Wednesday whether to proceed with trial. Mourners are gathered at 18 David Road, Athlone in Greendale.
