TELONE Zimbabwe has expressed its commitment in working with a Buhera-based internet company in setting up a network system that will capacitate rural institutions in information communication technology (ICT).

This follows calls by the company, Murambinda Works, for TelOne Zimbabwe to provide it with internet fibre material for the project to start running.

Murambinda Works has since installed 40km network radius towers that is expected to connect 80 rural schools, clinics, Government offices and other businesses within its reach. The solar-powered towers were installed at Nerutanga mountain in Buhera.

TelOne Zimbabwe managing director Mrs Chipo Mutasa said they were excited by the project and her company was considering partnering Murambinda Works.

"What we have seen is a very encouraging project for rural access deployment," she said.

"We are very excited because we know we have fibre backbone cables that end at Murambinda Growth point but we have not been able to deploy connectivity to some schools here. "A partnership with this group would enable us to deploy services much faster and be able to promote ICT in a faster and efficient way."

Murambinda Works projects manager Mr Joseph Bishi said their aim was to complement Government's efforts in improving access to ICTs in rural areas.

"The projects started as an internet cafe some 15 years ago. We then partnered a foreign company called Internet Society to develop an independent connection while responding to community calls for communication," he said.

Mr Bishi said they were still preparing for the installation and configuring the solar powered radios for the internet network provision. He said they were hoping to get the fibre backbone from TelOne Zimbabwe.

"We are still preparing for the installations of towers and configuration of radios and equipment. This is why we have engaged TelOne so that it gives us fibre backbone cables. We just need fibre backbone at our offices to start the project," he said. Mr Bishi said they have sourced enough funds for the completion of the project.

Buhera West lawmaker Soul Nzuma expressed gratitude over the project.

"This is a noble idea that would bridge the gap between Buhera rural folks and the whole world. Our hope is that TelOne provides the much needed fibre backbone to have the project running.

"Our Government is making efforts to make sure that all its citizens access ICTs and this project is in line with that vision," he said.
