Zimbabwe's mobile telecommunications sector boosted profitability in the nine months to September this year after posting aggregate revenues of US$331.2 million, latest Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) figures show.

POTRAZ Director General Dr Gift Machengete says the rise in revenues reflected a 13.1 percent growth from US$292.1million during the second quarter of this year.

"This rise in revenues is critical as it comes when we are focusing on more growth projections in the future," said Dr Machengete.

According to a telecommunication expert Mr Obert Mandimika, a rise in data usage is increasing income streams.

"It is all about what can be done to unlock profits," Mr Mandimika said.

Another expert Mr Mike Weeden noted that there is also need to focus on lowering costs for the sector.

"There is also the need for commitment to tap into growth prospects," said Mr Weeden.

In a related development, Zimbabwe has registered an increase in the uptake of ICT products and services within the education and health sector although more still needs to be done in terms of access to the utilities by the rural people, according to a latest survey also launched on Thursday.
