State-owned telecoms firm TelOne is planning to launch a neo face recognition technology early next year at the country's airports and traffic lights to reduce crime and to promote the smart cities intelligence,  which uses data and technology to create efficiencies .

The company said it has already engaged Home Affairs and Culture Heritage Ministry to start installing the system in January after being given green light by government.

The development comes at a time when the government has hiked road fines and this technology is expected to assist government in plugging revenue leakages.

Speaking at the Smart City launch last week in Mutare, TelOne innovation executive Jeremiah Munembe told the gathering that the product will be a game changer in ensuring the safety of the public and improving city's efficiency.

"TelOne has offered to roll out face recognition technology to the city of Mutare starting with traffic road rules monitoring. This partnership will see TelOne implementing red light violation cameras, speed cameras and public cameras across the city.  Mutare will be able to automatically fine law violations leading to improved revenue collections," Munembe said.

"This technology which recognises the face of an offender or suspected criminal at any given time when one is near a camera will be installed at various traffic lights and airports across the country."

TelOne is implementing Data Centers across the country having presence in Harare, Mazowe, and Bulawayo while in the process of planning to roll out in other towns including Mutare.

The telecoms company wants all the country's towns and cities to be smart cities which use data and technology to create efficiencies, improve sustainability, create economic development, and enhance quality of life factors including security for people living and working in the city.

It will also mean that the city has a smarter energy, transport and security infrastructure.

Congestion and poor planning of many cities and towns will be dealt with.

In addition to that, TelOne has launched a digital entertainment service dubbed Digital Entertainment On Demand (DEOD) which is Africa's first fully converged linear on-demand news and entertainment streaming service.

To achieve this milestone, TelOne partnered with South Africa's Discover Digital in order to give Zimbabweans access to a range of exciting new viewing options.
