The link gives state-owned telecommunications firm, TelOne, which funded the project, the capacity to carry domestic traffic for all local players in the telecommunications industry, as well as carry signal across Zambia.
Commissioning the optic fibre link, the Minister of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere noted that the establishment of the fibre optic links has completed the connectivity of Zimbabwe with neighbouring countries.
"I am told that this link together with the Beitbridge-Masvingo link that was commissioned by His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa will provide transit services that enable SADC member countries going all the way to Angola to connect to the whole world," he said.
With the establishment of the fibre link, there is hope that the country is positioning its infrastructure well for economic transformation.
"The potential in foreign currency earnings that this development brings about enhances our hope that we are getting the infrastructure right to deliver the economic transformation that we so look forward to.
"This project was part of the 2nd 100 days cycle plan framework for projects by the government and we are happy to report that it has been successfully completed. The link was constructed at a total of USD 1,5 million from TelOne's own financial resources," said Mary Mliswa
Internet users in the small community of Makuti and outlying areas covered by the link hailed the commissioning of the project which provides them with an opportunity to be part of the global village.
Information communication technology infrastructure is a key pillar in the economic development matrix of the country.
