The schools are Bwemula Primary (Ward 11), Malibeng Primary (Ward 9), Malungudzi Secondary (Ward 3) and Nuli High (Ward 15). Speaking during the commissioning of the US$23,6 million National Backbone Fibre Link by President Mnangagwa last week, the parastatals' board member responsible finance and audit, Mrs Viola Chasi, said they had donated 20 000 books, 20 000 pens and 10 sanitary pads to the female pupils.
"We thank the Beitbridge community for standing with us during the project's implementation and have today gathered to celebrate with us," she said.
"TelOne (Pvt) limited carries out Corporate Social Responsibility activities where we operate in. In that regard you will note that we have planted many trees which were cut during the construction of the National Backbone Fibre Link.
"Today also in line with the celebration of women we have taken the opportunity to extend our helping hand to the Beitbridge community. This is not a reward but a gesture of goodwill. We have donated books and sanitary pads for the girl child."
Mrs Chasi said the issue of menstrual cycle of women and the girl child was not given the importance that it deserved.
"In some case female pupils fail to go to school for extended periods because of this phenomenon which comes from nature. In order to support girls in this community, we give sanitary pads to them," she added.
She also said the construction of the optic fibre link had improved connectivity issues in the country and created employment for 1400 people in Matabeleland South province during the initial implementation stage.
She said commended the provincial government for their support and guidance during the construction of the optic fibre link.
Beitbridge proportional representation parliamentarian Ms Lisa Singo said the donation by TelOne was timeous considering that most female people in the remote areas were still having challenges accessing basic sanitary wear.
"This might look small, but it will have a great impact as we seek to improve the way of life for most children in especially difficulty situations.
"We urge other corporates to increase collaboration with Government in minimising the challenges facing rural female children," she said.
