TELONE has launched a mentorship programme to empower less privileged girls in secondary schools in Sakubva High Density suburb in Mutare.

The programme, dubbed TelOne Queen Makers, was launched in the city on Monday and is set to benefit about 200 girls.

TelOne head of corporate communications Mrs Melody Harry said the girls drawn from Sakubva 1 and Nyamauru High Schools would start their training this week. She said they would be taken through a series of empowering topics delivered by different experts.

The topics are leadership development, Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills, financial literacy, grooming and etiquette, sexual reproductive health, among other topics.

"The TelOne Girls Mentorship programme was first launched in Harare sometime in October last year as a symbolic celebration of the Day of the Girl Child which falls on October 11 each year," she said.

"On the launch day, TelOne committed to take the programme to other regions and hence we are launching it here in Mutare."

Mrs Harry said the programme would be running until the end of July this year. She said a mentor from TelOne would be assisting the girls and would also be taking them through the job until the end of the programme.

"Our goal is to nurture and support the girls' talents while we turn them into empowered, confident and exposed queens equipped with knowledge to make decisions about their future and careers," said Mrs Harry.

"Furthermore, the mentorship programme seeks to enhance personal development skills through interactive communication, critical thinking and decision-making initiatives. It will provide professional development opportunities that will prepare young girls for the workplace."

Mrs Harry said TelOne managing director Mrs Chipo Mtasa was the patron of the programme. She said TelOne would be working with United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and other development partners in training girls.

"These organisations are training the girls on sexual reproductive health through their different regions," said Mrs Harry.

"Investor Saints is taking the girls through financial literacy, while Vakoma Brands is taking the girls through personal branding, grooming and etiquette."

TelOne Northern region head Mrs Christine Nyatoti said girls must be bold enough to challenge the world and become leaders. Diamond FM presenters, Mercy Ngwebvu and Ucrying "Spidoo" Sasamba were part of the launch.
