THE total number of base stations in Zimbabwe was 8,570 as at 30 June 2018 and this represents a 1.1% growth from 8,473 recorded in March 2018 following the deployment of 97 additional base stations.

Econet managed to add eight 2G and six 3G base stations while the fourth-generation long-term evolution (4G LTE) stations remained constantly.

Telecel added one 2G and five 3G base stations and also didn’t add on their 17 4G bases which leave the company lagging behind its competitors, NetOne and Econet, who are on 291 and 647 4G stations respectively.

NetOne is the only mobile company who deployed an addition of 4G base stations with a net addition of four. This complimented their 2G and 72 3G additional base stations added in the second quarter.

Rural areas continue to lag behind urban areas in terms of deployment of telecommunication services infrastructure. The disparity between rural areas and urban areas in the population coverage is alarming and needs an urgent address.

More still needs to be done to improve rural connectivity. The report states that there was no significant change in the market share of base station infrastructure.
