Zimbabwe internet subscribers continue increasing

ACTIVE internet subscriptions in Zimbabwe increased by 5.7% to reach 7,197,279 in the second quarter of 2018 compared to 6,810,847 which was recorded in the first quarter of 2018 according to a sector performance report by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ).

In addition, the internet penetration rate increased by 2.8% to reach 51.9% from 49.1% recorded in the previous quarter. This is largely attributable to the 17% and 6% increase in active fibre and mobile subscriptions respectively.

All other technologies increased save for Leased line, WiMAX and CDMA which recorded decreases of -2.9%, -12.3% and -2% respectively. Active fibre subscription saw the highest increase with total active internet subscription totaling to 5.7%.

Meanwhile, mobile internet and data usage increased by 16.9% to record 6,104TB from 5,220TB recorded in the previous quarter. Data utilisation from WhatsApp bundles constituted 34.4% and Facebook 1.3% of total mobile internet data utilisation.

The growing popularity of social media is expected to drive data usage in the coming years. The market share of mobile internet and data used saw Econet recording a 3.5% increase from the 67.1% recorded in the first quarter.

NetOne and Telecel saw their market share and data traffic declining by 1.1% and 4.2% respectively.
