The Africa Data Centre Association (ADA) was recently launched in Zimbabwe to support the country's migration towards a digital economy.

ADA Chairman Dunny Derera said, "In spite of the importance of datacentres to the African economy, datacentres are still underexposed in the media, politics, governments and society. We believe the datacentre industry deserves a proper representation in these fields. That's why we are launching the ADA - the trade association for datacentres in Africa."

"The new association will provide the first organisational body for African operators, a valuable resource supporting industry best practice, an outstanding networking platform for the exchange of information and ideas," he added.

According to Derera, the advent of datacentres is "at a very critical time when the global world is trying to counter the digital revolution."

The ADA aims to initiate new government projects and connect with existing ones in order to promote the African Digital Mainport. Its core mandate is to drive awareness of the industry towards stakeholders such as government, the media and society at large.

"We are lobbying to influence governmental policies in areas of energy policy, legislation and planning to align them with the needs of the sector," Derera added.

Datacentres play a critical role in the market and are particularly relevant when businesses are subjected to internet blackouts, such as that experienced in Zimbabwe in December, 2017.

Independent economist Moses Moyo said: "Companies will not lose their information, as it would be backed up on these datacentres."

Savannah Telecom has confirmed plans to develop a true Tier 4 specification datacentre that will house 250 cabinets in Zimbabwe. This facility will have an annualised Power Utilisation Effectiveness (PUE) ratio of 1.16 at full capacity and 1.3 at just 20% capacity.

In February 2018, Zimbabwe, for the first time, hosted the Data Centre Africa Expo Conference (DCA).
