A new visualisation of global mobile data prices, produced by Howmuch.net, shows that show Zimbabwe mobile data prices are more expensive than most African countries.

The visualisation uses data from 6,313 mobile data plans in 230 countries which were gathered and analysed by Cable.co.uk between 23 October and 28 November 2018.

The average cost of one gigabyte (1GB) was then calculated and compared to form a worldwide mobile data pricing league table.

Telecom industry sources in the Southern African country say mobile companies will apply for an upward review of data tariffs owing to massive inflation increases.

Zimbabwe is joined by Equatorial Guinea, where mobile data costs US$65.83 per 1GB and Djibouti whose average data costs are around US$37.92 per 1GB.

The average cost of mobile data in Zambia, Lesotho and Tanzania is US$2.25, US$2.43 and US$7.51 per 1GB respectively.

Following an article that's been making noise about the cost of mobile data in Zimbabwe, POTRAZ has come out disputing the findings of the study with its own calculation of real the cost of mobile data in Zimbabwe relative to other African countries.

The data reveals that Rwanda offers the cheapest at $0.56 per GB, followed by Sudan ($0.68) and the DRC ($0.88).

South Africa was ranked 40th out of 60 African countries listed in the report at $7.19 per GB of mobile data.
