ECONET subscribers have been stranded for days following interruptions to voice, data and EcoCash services.

Scores of stranded people queued at Zesa offices over the weekend trying to purchase electricity tokens after they encountered network challenges.

Deputy Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Energy Mutodi, on his official Twitter account yesterday, said Government had noted the disruptions with concern.

"There is an intermittent breakdown of internet services and mobile telephone access today. Please take note that Government is equally disturbed by the breakdown and we hope normal services will be restored as a matter of urgency," said Mutodi.

Efforts to get a comment from Econet Public Relations Officer, Mr Fungai Mandiveyi, were fruitless yesterday as his phone rang unanswered.

However, Econet sent messages to its clients yesterday acknowledging the network challenges and apologising for the glitches.

"Dear customer, we apologise for the intermittent disruptions in voice, data and EcoCash services. Our engineers are working flat out to restore service," read the message.

Many people who spoke to The Chronicle said they had encountered challenges after failing to transfer funds from bank accounts to their EcoCash wallets and vice versa.

Banks were teeming with activity from clients who sought to do transaction reversals as EcoCash services continued to be affected by the glitches.

A Bulawayo resident, Mr Nelson Mlandu, yesterday said he had to abort his Beitbridge trip after he failed to access funds to pay for his bus fare via EcoCash.

"I bank with ZB and I wanted to transfer money from my account to my wallet. The money was deducted from my bank account but somehow never got to my EcoCash. It was an inconvenience because I am travelling. I want to go to Beitbridge and I was hoping to pay for the fare via EcoCash. I had to abort my trip," said Mr Mlandu.

A shopper at a local supermarket said she was stranded after failing to pay for her groceries via the service due to network challenges.

Most pharmacies in the city have not been accepting EcoCash payments since Saturday afternoon due to the network problems.

Stranded people thronged Econet offices in the city yesterday after botched EcoCash transactions.
