TELECOMS giant, NetOne, yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Zimbabwe Republic Police's traffic section in a bid to decongest the Harare central business district.

In an interview with H-Metro, NetOne board chairperson James Mutizwa said:

"As NetOne we are joining hands with the Zimbabwe Republic Police Traffic section to decongest Harare and arrest bad drivers.

"The background of this partnership stems from our commitment to developing communities, by playing a pivotal role in assisting the police to perform their duties.

"As NetOne we have selected 28 prime intersections, experiencing high traffic volumes throughout the CBD and this marks the initial phase of our Safe City Partnership with the ZRP Traffic section.

"For the meantime, we have handed over four motorbikes, 217 reflective jackets, 230 rain suits and whistles to capacitate Traffic police at these 28 intersections while organising for cameras which will be phase two of the partnership.

"The grid of the 28 sections covers Simon Muzenda from Kenneth Kaunda through Josiah Tongogara, Rotten Row from Cripps to Josiah Tongogara as well as all the roads that cut across and connect the two.

"We have given all the power to the ZRP to take control over the given equipment and arrest all perpetrators."

Receiving the equipment and singing the MOU, Deputy Commissioner General (Operations), Learn Ncube said:

"This contract, which relates to easing traffic congestion in the Central Business District of Harare and the cameras to be introduced, is coming at a time when the ZRP is enhancing efforts to tame the traffic jungle and bring an end to the chaos in the CBD.

"As law enforcement agency, we are also deeply gratified by the benevolent move made by NetOne to donate equipment under the banner ZRP-Netone Smart Cities Partnership.

"As ZRP we assure you that the organization will reciprocate this gesture by ensuring that the highest quality of service in traffic management is delivered."
