Econet Wireless Boss Strive Masiyiwa has taken to Facebook to explain why his company complied with government directive to shut down internet the whole of Zimbabwe.

Masiyiwa said a when a directive is issued there is no other way but to follow it.

"This morning I was informed that the authorities in Zimbabwe have directed all internet services to be shut down." Masiyiwa said. "As it was a written directive issued in terms of law, non-compliance would result in immediate imprisonment of management on the ground."

Masiyiwa further said last week he received a similar directive in the Democratic Republic of Congo and he complied.

"Last week we were issued with a similar order in DRC and we complied as directed. Whenever such directives are issued, management call in the legal teams and review them in terms of law."

On Tuesday Zimbabwe was plunged into a countrywide blackout of internet as soldiers were deployed in residential areas to arrest residents suspected to have participated in Monday's violent protests.
