Minister of ICT Postal and Courier  Services and Cyber Security Hon Kazembe Kazembe has availed details on new board members in the State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) telecommunications sector.

NetOne will have a new board while TelOne, Potraz and Telecel will be seeing additions amidst a stern way forward strategy.

Speaking to TechnoMag during the Zanu-PF 17th conference in Esigodini, the minister said all was set for the new board members announcement starting off with NetOne.

"The names of the new board members have already been submitted to the principals and standard vetting procedures have to be done and are expected to be complete latest this week" said Kazembe

The minister mentioned interesting standards and criterion he is using, which if completely implemented, NetOne and other SOEs will be set for greater heights.

Top amongst the issues he mentioned, the minister said that the new boards will be filed in by people who have proven track records of moving huge and profitable enterprises, not just those with paper qualifications to claim knowledge.

Kazembe said he will build a team that will be able to turn around SOEs by recommending competent candidates who will assume positions on merit while they also have to look into other issues like gender and provincial representation.

Many names have been thrown around to suggest the new incoming chairperson but the minister clearly said these individuals as well will have to be clean and without unnecessary controversy to stir way forward  for the sector.

This pours cold water into other popular names which were rumoured, and also the reason why the process has taken longer, as the minister puts the house in order.

Responding to the question of the actual executives running the SOEs whether or not they will need to be maintained or cleaned out, the minister said he had confidence n the boards he is installing to run the matter and that will be their jurisdiction.

"I can not be buying dogs and also bark with them, I am sure their bark will be as sharp as their bite and trust them to run logistics at that level" said Kazembe

The minister was very clear that telecoms business is a very profitable one, but greatly concerned that in an industry where other operators like Econet are inching 1 billion revenues, NetOne and TelOne were making losses.
