Zimpost enters new era

The new Government led by President Mnangagwa is committed to the growth of the postal and courier services sector and ultimately the provision of the same to all, Information Communication Technology and Courier Services Deputy Minister Jerifan Muswere has said.

Deputy Minister Muswere made the remarks while officiating at the belated World Post Day commemorations held at Mudzi Business Centre recently.

World Post Day is officially celebrated on October 9, but due to the cholera outbreak which hit the country recently, but has been contained, the celebrations were shelved temporarily. This year's commemorations were held under the theme, "The post: Delivering goods to the world".

In his remarks, Deputy Minister Muswere said Government was aware of the need to grow the postal services for the benefit of its citizens.

"Our Government is committed to the growth of the postal and courier services. This is particularly so as the Government is cognisant of the fact that the postal infrastructure represents its investment which must be utilised for the benefit of all citizens," Deputy Minister Muswere said.

"I am sure you are already aware that the majority of our population lives in remote areas. It is for that reason that my ministry is committed to the transformation of this postal and courier services landscape so that it is better positioned to serve these marginalised members of our society."

In his remarks, ZIMPOST acting managing director Mr Chief Moyo said his company was committed to serving all citizens and will ensure it diversifies to meet technological changes world-wide.

"People have not changed, but their communication needs have changed. ZIMPOST has taken note of the developments around technology, the disruptions and opportunities that it spews out," he said.

"ZIMPOST has over the years diversified its product portfolio from predominantly traditional parcel and mail business by adaption to technology in order to meet ever changing customer needs."

Mr Moyo said the parastatal came up with a variety of innovative and value-added products and services to ensure that citizens' needs were met.

"ZIMPOST is playing an important role in the economy by enabling financial inclusion of Zimbabweans from all walks of life. (It) transformed its money transfer service from being telegraphic to electronic and this low-cost money transfer service called Zipcash covers domestic and selected international destinations such as Botswana, Kenya, Malawi and South Africa and Tanzania," he said.

Mr Moyo said other services include ZIMPOST Mall, an online platform where people can buy or sell goods, other services such as Post Insurance, PostLife Funeral Cash Plan among other services. Looking to the future, Mr Moyo said ZIMPOST will be back soon with e-government services for the easy access of Government services.

"We will soon be back with e-government services and our desire is that you apply for and collect your passports, birth certificates and all other key documents at the post office," he said.

"I am also pleased to inform you that this year, ZIMPOST issued the Zimbabwe Open for Business commemorative postage stamp on July 18 to assist in spreading the message that defines the direction being taken by the government in its effort to turn around the fortunes of the country and to have Zimbabwe fully re-integrated into the international community."
