ICT sector registers $1 billion revenue

The Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector registered a phenomenal rise in revenue to $1 billion last year from $600 million in 2010, legislators have heard.

Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe director-general Dr Gift Machengete said investment in the sector had been on an upward trajectory as evidenced by the deployment of fibre, which covered 8 765km in 2017.

Dr Machengete said this on Monday before the Parliamentary Portfolio committee on ICTs.

"ICTs have been identified as a key enabler for Vision 2030 due to their role in national development, ICTs play a pivotal role in the growth of an economy as services are now used in almost all sectors of the economy, ranging from commerce, agriculture, health, education among others," said Dr Machengete.

"Mobile penetration rate increased from 25 percent in 2009 to 102 percent in 2017. The Internet penetration rate rose from five percent in 2009 to about 51 percent in 2017. Sector revenues went up from about $600 million in 2010 to above $1 billion in 2017.
