ZIMBABWE Miners Federation (ZMF) and its financial partner, MetBank, have launched an electronic multi-purpose membership card for miners at a colourful ceremony held in Shurugwi.

The electronic card can be linked to the mobile phone and enables a miner to access loans from the bank, access mining equipment offered by the bank, confirm membership, purchase goods, pay bills and zipit transfers among others.

In a speech during the launch of the card on Thursday, ZMF president Ms Henrietta Rushwaya said the card has a lot of benefits including easing fuel shortages that have threatened to cripple the mining sector.

"We expect every member of our association across the country to be in possession of the card in order to enjoy the benefits. We have engaged service stations across the country that will supply fuel to our members," she said.

Miners who have been facing challenges with the police over possession of gold ore now have a card to confirm they are members of the association.

"We are grateful to Government for announcing that possession of gold ore is no longer a crime but miners were still facing challenges with police," said Ms Rushwaya.

She commended MetBank for supporting the mining sector by advancing loans to buy equipment. MetBank recently availed a $10 million facility to support the small scale miners.

Speaking at the same occasion, MetBank consumer banking divisional director, Ms Sarah Tembedza said the mining sector was a critical source of foreign currency.
