'Zimbabwe telcos must roll over unused data'

VARIOUS sections in Zimbabwe have challenged local telecommunications networks to consider "roll over of unused data and transfer of data."

Network operators have been under intense scrutiny in recent months for allegedly ripping off consumers, especially when it comes to data expiry dates and out-of-bundle billing.

Promotions available on Econet, NetOne and Telecel allow users to consume data, however upon its expiry, the unused data will automatically vanish.

In April the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) announced four new regulations to end-user and subscriber services.

Users in South Africa are allowed to carry over unused data to the next month. All service providers are required to provide this option as this ensures that consumers do not lose unused data as in Zimbabwean practice.

Another regulation is that all network providers allow consumers to transfer data to other users on the same network and service providers will no longer be allowed to charge consumers out-of-bundle rates when data has run out without the consumers' specific prior consent.

As a result, our local mobile networks have not yet considered the option which will be well welcomed by all consumers.

One legislator Chalton, Hwende posted on his Twitter blog, "Roll over of unused data and transfer of Data should seriously be considered by our service Providers without waiting for the Regulator and public outcry. Our neighbouring countries are already doing it. @econet_support @NetoneSupport @Telecel_Zim @liquidtelecom @PowerTelZW."
