Zimbabwe's smallest mobile network operator, Telecel suffered a 13.1% decline in subscriber numbers from a total of 1.4m in the first quarter of 2018 to a decline of 1.2m subscribers in the second quarter.

According to the sector performance report by the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz), Telecel is the only operator to register a decrease in active subscribers after competitors Econet and NetOne registered 4.5% and 10.1% respectively.

"Based on subscribers statistics Telecel lost 2.1% market share whereas Econet and NetOne gained market share by 0.6% and 1.4% respectively," says the report.

The report further revealed that on mobile traffic and usage patterns there was a 9.1% growth recorded where Econet retains the upper hand in terms of the numbers.

"Econet is the dominant operator in terms of mobile voice service with over 70% market share. However, in the quarter under review, Econet lost 2.5% voice traffic market share whereas Telecel and NetOne gained 1.1% and 1.4% respectively,"

On the internet and mobile data, the market share of mobile internet and data is comparable to the market share of mobile voice traffic with Econet dominating the market with over 70% market share and the rest being shared by the other 2 operators.

Data usage is set to improve with the growing popularity of social media networks. Telecel remains lagging behind other mobile networks in the market and the decline in numbers is an indication that the Telecomms company is failing to maintain its current subscriber base.
